In this guide, we'll explore the best places to run, ride, and enjoy a coffee/pint in Brighton and its surrounding towns. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a coffee aficionado, or someone who simply loves a city escape, there's almost certainly something here for you.

Running in Brighton

The Trails of Stanmer Park

With trails that weave through woods and open fields, it's a runner's (and dog walker’s) paradise. The air here is fresh, tinged with the scent of wildflowers and earth. Running at Stanmer is a great way to get in some low-impact miles with a healthy dose of elevation. And if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can use it as a meeting point for a longer run over the South Downs to a quaint countryside village.

Not a Fan of Elevation? Glide Along the Seafront's Tarmac

For those who prefer their runs with a side of sea breeze, the flat tarmac along Brighton's seafront is a dream. Picture this: the sun rising over the horizon, casting golden hues on the water, as you set your pace to the rhythm of crashing waves.

While it sounds pretty idyllic, we must warn you that - as is often the case with seafront running - there’s always the danger of getting locked into multiple battles as you head up and down the promenade.

After you’ve finished your run, head to Fika or Flourpot for a coffee, before strolling along the seafront and admiring the braver souls who sea-dip all year round.

And if you’re bored of solo running, there’s always the Angry Pablo Social Club.

Cycling in Brighton

Conquer the South Downs' Off-Road Trails

If your heart races at the thought of off-road adventures, the South Downs are calling your name. Here, the paths aren't always smooth, but that’s not what you signed up for. Each bump and bend is a chance to test your bike-handling skills and push your limits. If you’re starting in Brighton, we’d recommend heading out East over the rolling hills to Lewes and Cuckmere Haven, before ending with a cold pint at the Pilot Inn in Eastbourne.

Climb the Iconic Ditchling Beacon

For the masochists amongst you who enjoy a good Strava segment, Ditchling Beacon is a legendary ascent for Brighton-based riders. And while short in relative terms, you can almost guarantee it’ll bite a little more than anticipated. As you pedal upwards, the city fades away, replaced by sweeping views of the Sussex countryside. Don’t expect to grab any KOMs here though, local world tour rider Lukas Nurerkar recently set a time up that is difficult to comprehend and hard to imagine being beaten.

Post-Ride/Run Coffee and Community

Find Solace at Fika and Flourpot

In Brighton, coffee is more than just a drink; it's a lifestyle. At Fika, you'll find a cozy corner where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee is as comforting as the hearty egg sandwiches being prepared out back. It's a place where time slows, conversation flows and each sip is savoured. Flourpot offers a similar solace, with a selection of pastries on offer that are famous throughout town.

Both perfect post-run meeting spots, these cafés are spaces where people gather to switch off from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation with friends.
